Torre del Greco’s Museum of Art, Coral and Cameos Makes Its Debut at VIOFF in Vicenza
The Museum of Art, Coral, Cameos and the City, inaugurated just a few months ago, is venturing beyond Torre del Greco for the first time. On 5 and 6 September, it will take centre stage at the Jewellery Museum in Vicenza with virtual content and live demonstrations of the art of cameo carving.
The Torre del Greco museum will be among the highlights of VIOFF, the off-site programme created through a partnership between the Municipality of Vicenza and Italian Exhibition Group. Held alongside each edition of the trade fair, VIOFF features a programme of events designed to build a bridge between the city and one of the world’s leading international events dedicated to goldsmithing and jewellery.
MAC3 will showcase the evolution of Italian jewellery and, for two days, offer visitors a window onto the traditions of Torre del Greco. The presentation carries particular significance for a museum established not only to tell the story of coral and cameo craftsmanship, but also to highlight the deep bond that these artistic traditions have forged with Torre del Greco over the centuries.
The invitation from the organisers of Vicenzaoro was taken up by the Torre del Greco Coral and Cameo Consortium, which will bring more than just a visual narrative to Vicenza. Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience the craftsmanship of Torre del Greco’s workshops first-hand: an artisan will give live carving demonstrations, allowing the public to observe and experience the gestures and techniques behind a centuries-old craft that has helped make Torre del Greco renowned throughout the world.
Mayor Luigi Mennella sees the initiative as an important opportunity to promote the city’s new museum.
“As a municipal administration, we immediately accepted the proposal put forward by the Consortium. The participation of companies from Torre del Greco in this important international trade fair is a long-established tradition, but for the first time it will be accompanied by an equally significant presence, one that strongly represents our identity: the MAC3 Museum. For the Municipality, this is an initiative conceived primarily to attract more visitors and provide them with the tools to understand the historical importance of coral and cameo craftsmanship, which has made our artisans a unique example throughout the world.”
Michela Amenduni, Director of the Jewellery Museum in Vicenza, also emphasises the importance of this partnership in supporting and promoting tradition, highlighting the relevance of Torre del Greco’s heritage within the landscape of Italian craftsmanship.
“We are particularly pleased to host at the Jewellery Museum an initiative dedicated to one of the most highly regarded jewellery-making traditions in Italy. Coral and cameo craftsmanship, included in Geographical Indications for craft and industrial products, represents one of the most significant examples of the creativity, savoir-faire and craftsmanship of Made in Italy recognised around the world.”
Through the live demonstration, this tradition will be presented as living knowledge, passed down and practised through craftsmanship.
“Its workshop-based and interactive dimension fits perfectly with both the Museum’s vocation and the spirit of VIOFF,” Amenduni adds, “enriching the programme with an experience that offers visitors the opportunity to engage directly with this artisanal tradition and gain a close-up appreciation of its techniques, gestures and expertise.”
Vincenzo Aucella, President of the Torre del Greco Coral and Cameo Consortium and Assocoral, also expressed his satisfaction:
“We would like to thank the management of Vicenzaoro for once again involving us in such an important international showcase. We also thank the Municipal Administration and the Culture Office, which immediately supported our commitment to bringing the city’s museum to Vicenza for two days, through a dedicated resolution approved by the Municipal Executive. Concrete initiatives to promote the MAC3 Museum are therefore continuing and, indirectly, are also helping to enhance our artistic craftsmanship. We are fully aware that everyone must play their part, working together across the public and private sectors, to write a new chapter for Torre del Greco.”
